After a severe storm concludes, we strongly urge all residents to stay home rather than driving around to look at the damage.
While curiosity is understandable, post-storm sightseeing creates significant challenges for our emergency responders and utility crews. When our streets are congested with unnecessary traffic, it directly hinders our ability to clear roadways, restore power, and assist those in immediate need.
Here is why staying off the roads is critical for our community's recovery efforts:
- Crew Access: Our Public Works teams, Police Department, Fire Department, and Independence Light & Power, Telecommunications (ILPT) crews need clear paths to navigate large vehicles and heavy equipment. Neighborhood traffic delays our ability to remove fallen trees, clear storm debris, and replace broken utility poles.
- Hidden Dangers: Downed power lines can be incredibly difficult to see, especially at night or when tangled in branches. Driving over or walking near a downed line puts you at risk of severe injury and forces our utility crews to halt restoration efforts to address a preventable emergency. We ask everyone to assume every downed wire is energized and dangerous.
- Secondary Accidents: Distracted driving while looking at storm damage often leads to vehicle collisions. These accidents require immediate responses from our emergency services, pulling our first responders away from urgent storm-related recovery tasks.
We understand the desire to stay informed and check on the community. However, the most effective way you can support our city after a severe weather event is to remain safely at home. If you must travel, please do so only for essential needs and treat all dark intersections as four-way stops.
